Monday, I had the pleasure of taking Peter Matthiessen (not only an iconic writer but also a personal hero of mine) out fishing off Montauk, New York, to witness the truly incredible spectacle of the autumn striped bass migration. My sister Lydia also joined us and is in one of the photos.
The striped bass were so depleted in the 1980s that fishing was banned. Some folks were considering an endangered species petition. Through smart management (a rare thing), they eventually came roaring back. This is what can be done.
For my PBS TV series, Saving the Ocean, we are looking at two other fish that are recovering in the Northeast: cod and swordfish. Surprising but true. This is also what can be done.
