Welcome
Welcome to my site. The best way for me to describe the main theme of what I do is to say that I write and speak about ‘How the ocean is changing and what it means for wildlife and for people.’ But I’m interested more broadly in our relationship to the world and to each other. Human dignity and nature both require each other.
Without dignity, people trash their natural environment. Without nature, people live grim lives with few options and fewer opportunities for hope. And hopeless people turn violent as they struggle to just exist. I used to think we needed merely to cut fishing quotas and protect natural areas. The task at hand is much more encompassing. Protecting coral reefs, and educating rural girls, are two sides of the same overall task. And it starts with our self-identity and how we perceive our relationship to one another and to the world. These are the themes I write and think about, and that I explore in the physical world and in my books and articles.
